Meet the tough but light Crucial. With professional-grade components of precise needle nose pliers along with eight other carefully selected features, this everyday carry essential multi-tool belongs to the ever-diverse, ever-popular series of Gerber multi-tools.

Prepared For Action

The Crucial steps right up to respond to the surprise hurdles life springs so routinely. It offers the partially serrated blade and the Phillips and flat drivers, all of which are liner locking for safe application, to tackle the business end of daily snags. Use the partially serrated blade to make short work of rope cutting or package opening, and tighten down loose screws around the house, the office, or out on a work site with the Phillips or flat head screwdrivers.

Compact But Not Dainty

In addition to the knife and screwdrivers, the Crucial contains a nicely long pair of needle nose pliers, a bottle opener, V-cut wire cutters, a carabiner clip, and an ingenious pocket clip, making this tool the shrewdest of daily carries. The handles of the tool are ergonomically curved for a solid grip and increased torque. Beautifully incorporating its precise assortment of tools within the unobtrusive, 3.5-inch frame, the slim, lean Crucial lets you face trouble without fear.

    a Crucial piece of gear
I have used it every day, multiple times a day, for 2 years. It's held up well and the pliers are surprisingly strong for their thin construction. Unfortunately it must be opened and closed with two hands(unlike the gerber Octane and larger multitools). The octane has stronger pliers and a 1 handed opening and closing but because of the location of the pocket clip it opens in your pocket. Don't have to worry about that with this one.
ProsSolid construction Blade and tools are accessible without opening the pliers. Small Pliers work for most of my daily needs Doesn't open in your pocket
ConsTwo handed operation Pliers aren't quite up to all tasks. Screw drives are a little too short for some tasks.

    Not bad, not great
I like the tools on this product except the pliers. Each has a nice locking liner... very nice if you've ever had a tool close on your hand while using. The knife came sharp and usable. The screwdrivers also are functional. The pliers, though, are very narrow in the bite, like tiny needle nose pliers. They don't feel strong or able to get a good grip. The tool overall is on the small side and may be difficult if you have big hands.
    Proslocking liners functionality sharp knife
    Conspliers size (maybe)

Can the strap cutter be deployed with one hand?

With a little practice it can be, but indexing by touchy can be tricky at first. Just try it a few times and you should get a feel for it with either hand.

No. The size and length of the multi-tool is hard to manipulate with one hand (even with practice). The hinging to open the tool up (thus separating the grips) is tight by design and you also have to fold out the strap cutter, also tight by design. Pros: Small size, price, and usefulness. Cons: Pocket knife design requires two hands.
