Decent Boots for the Price
I have been buying these boots for years it seems like, I know I've bought them since at least 2010 if not before. I bought them for work and for motorcycle riding. They used to be more waterproof, I went through rain at Sturgis in 2011 and in 2015 and my feet stayed fairly dry and I don't recall waterproofing them. If I did, it was probably some spray stuff. When I got a new pair not long before going for a long ride in 2016, I never thought to waterproof, I should have. The leather in the toes cracked, though not clear through, I'm still wearing them out, though I rotated with my older pair. I had used foot powder and it looked like it was coming through every time they got wet after that, though I finally got some waterproofer stuff and they are better. Getting worn out though so time for a new pair. They are fairly comfortable, and the size, so far, has been consistent. If I loosen them a bit, I can wear some 5.11 socks and some more winter weight ones to ride in the colder weather. They are ok riding, down to about 40-45 degrees, but eventually your feet will get cold. They are a bit warm in hot weather but not bad, and with appropriate socks, ok in cold weather but the soles are not particularly slip resistant, though they say they are. Yeah, a little but not great on ice or really wet floors or mud. You have to walk with care. Obviously I like them enough to buy more, for the price, they are a good buy. I did want the waterproof version this time, but they are on a long term backorder. I have motorcycle boots now, though I will use them for backup, and normal daily wear. I will also waterproof them.
ProsGood price. Decent construction, not outstanding, but they do last. Laces hold up well. Side zip has been great so far on all of them. Comfortable out of the box, minimal break in. Sometimes a new insole is a good idea, depending on how they fit, there is some variance. For what I pay, I can't really complain.
ConsNot waterproof anymore. Not all that slip resistant-I work for a truck dealer, though I don't get in the shop a lot, if they have been cleaning floors, I am very careful, they can slip. They also slip on ice, and in mud, ok in snow. They no longer come with those excellent socks, or a hat or anything really. Too bad, I got a couple of decent knives, hats, and those socks are great.

Comfortable and sturdy
I stand for more than 8 hours a day while at work. My previous boots I've bought for years were discontinued by the manufacturer (rhymes with "Hair-Tac") last year so I was looking for a replacement set. I have 5.11 pants so I am somewhat familiar with this brand. The price is decent and out of the box I found them to be comfy (Size 6.5). Most boots have paper thin insoles but after sticking a pair of my sport orthotics in--lots of support! To be fair, the boots have a "bouncy" feel when you walk with the original insoles. Feet got tired but not too bad after the 10 hour mark. I stand and walk on the kind of flooring you see in fancy supermarkets. Terrible on the knees but these boots did their job and I will be buying another pair to alternate with.
ProsCost is good Breaking in period was minimal 2 - 3 days (I stand and walk back and forth all day so my boots conformed to my feet much faster than a light duty wearer) Fit is true to size, if you have wide feet it might be tight unless your socks are thin (support hose) Looks professional and shines up nice
ConsMy size was not readily available--back ordered for 2 weeks

Love these boots. They are so comfortable!

After 2 years - sole separates from boot starting at toe.
I love these boots, they are still functional, but the sole glue has started separating from the boot starting at the toe, all other aspects of the boot are great and they fit well and are comfortable. I wear them everyday here in Afghanistan. I tried to glue the sole back on to no avail. So here I am buying another pair. Finally one of the soles is separated enough I had better have a spare pair before the entire thing comes off and I walk thru the streets of Kabul in my socks.
ProsComfortable Fit well like the small side pocket for small boot knife, or karambit Zipper on these seems long enough and can slip off/on easy enough
ConsSole starts separating starting at the toe.

Best Working Boots!!!!
I just purchase my number 5th pair Usually use them over 1 year and a half, without any issues after you brake them well Use them on duty 12 hours a day Highly recommended Can't wait to get my next pair. Unfortunately their in back order, is why I give 4 stars instead of 5 also now I missing the 3 pairs of 511 socks gift for your purchase.
ProsGREAT PROCT OVER ANY OTHER OUT THERE.
ConsTaken away the gift of 3 pairs of 511 socks I missed after have them for over the years...

I had the waterproof version of this boot last year and loved them... these ones are a bit lighter and use different insoles, but are still excellent

I love these boots. Literally no break in period and takes a shine really easily. Best pair I've own so far

Excellent, solid boots
I've been wearing a pair of these almost exclusively for a year now. The only time I'm not wearing them is when I'm at the beach or dressed up. They've held up perfectly, have never had an issue, and are just now getting worn to the point of buying a second pair, after a year of wearing them nonstop. I'm also buying the ASTM compliant version for my job, since the regular pair was such a solid experience. Cannot recommend enough.
ProsMost comfortable boots I've ever worn Good waterproofing even with no maintenance Size zips are perfect, never catch Knife pocket is very handy for when I don't have my EDC knife on me
ConsVery minor note is that the velcro strap that covers the zipper is not stitched on as well as the rest of the boot, so it has gradually peeled off so only one side of it is now attached to the boot. Barely noticeable 99% of the time, though.

Good boot but forgotten items ???
My second pair of these boots as I was very happy with the first pair so I bought another pair of them. Unfortunately, when I purchased them, the banner at the top claimed I should have been sent a free LAPG hat and a pair of 5.11 socks with the purchase. I received neither of them, nor did I receive and response to the email I sent asking about them.
Prossmall pocket at the top to hold a concealed knife.

Great duty/every day boot
This is the 2nd pair of this model boot I've owned. I bought my 1st pair back in 2012 and have worn them for duty Security/LE as well as an every day boot. The tread has lasted with a few times of me using super glue....but the leather hasn't had issues and very light scuffing. There have been a few minor changes in the way the boot looks/made but that's expected in 5 years.
ProsDurable Comfortable Reliable
ConsSome manufacturing changes

Not the best quality
Bought these boots in Nov 2015, and they are falling apart.. the bottoms are peeling off, as well as the front area of the toes.. Not very happy with how little amount of time I've had these boots, and how they are not holding up well. I need a high quality boot for the work that I do.

Perfect work boots
I am a huge advocate of 5.11 tactical equipment. They always hit the mark in these boots are no exception. The side zipper is an amazing addition. They are extremely durable and unlike other cheap boots they stay intact after extreme wear and tear. After a couple days of breaking them in, they extremely comfortable.

Based on the most recent review, what changes have been made to the newer model??
There pretty much the same boot they've always been. I'm on my feet 12 hours a day. I prefer theses boots over all others. All I do is change out the insoles with some Nike running insoles and there flawless

My most recent purchase of these boots is 22 December 2016. I read Ed's review and am not experiencing the same issues. So, either he is describing a different style/brand, or I received a pair from the old stock. I haven't seen any updates in 5.11's website. My best recommendation is to contact 5.11 directly with your question. If my next pair is closer to what Ed was describing, I will amend this review, or add another with my experience.

I didn't receive a knife when I purchased these boots this time, that was a different promotion. I ordered these same boots in 2014 (best boots I've ever bought, lasted 2 years of 5-6 days a week wear.. Will buy them again in 2 years), and received a folding knife then. I still carry the knife. Hope this helps

I just bought a pair of these boots but I did not get a promo knife with them. I can say that even though I've barely broken these boots in so far, they are some of the most comfortable footwear I've ever worn.

Do you happen to know When will be the next 511 sell
We are not typically notified ahead of time when the 5.11 sales go down, but anytime 5.11 has a sale, we match their sale prices and we try to run our sales for 5.11 items along the same time they do.

can they be waterproofed?
There are various sprays that you can purchase to waterproof footwear, so i don't see as to why you wouldn't be able to waterproof these. They do come in a waterproof version though, located here - http://www.lapolicegear.com/5taat8wasizi.html
on August 14, 2015
I spray mine with waterproofing and I have ridden street bikes in the rain with them and so far, they have kept my feet mostly dry. My only real complaints are that I usually end up putting a Dr. Scholls gel insert in to replace the supplied insert, and they aren't that non-skid, especially in snow and on ice. You really have to walk slowly and carefully. For the main part of the year, that's not an issue. For the price and features, it's hard to beat them.

the rule is you would normally want to size down 2 sizes from a mens size so if you were a size 6 in womens then you would need a size 4 in mens. Please search the follow part number as this would be the womens version of this boot. 511-12007

I saw that buyers are saying to buy these boots a size bigger, than your usual boot size. So if I buy these boots in a size of 10.5, should I buy them one size bigger like in a 11.5?
We have seen a number of reviews advising to order a half size bigger than you normally wear, but we cannot guarantee that ordering a different size than you normally wear will fit.
