  • Customer Reviews:The best coat I've ever owned!

"I bought this coat in black a couple years ago just for personal use. I wore it for 1 winter when I used to work security and I was hooked. This is THE warmest coat I've ever owned, topping any professional skiing coat I've ever had. When I became a cop, I loved the coat so much that I convinced my Chief to let me dump my dumb nylon-ish issued duty coat and wear this. I showed it to him, and he liked it so much he bought them too. All the pockets are awesome, I keep all the gear I normally keep in my uniform shirt pockets in them, and still have room for basically an entire extra set of duty gear inside it if I so wanted.

The pull out panels are awesome too, I had them screen printed in subdued white/grey with my department's name. I put subdued grey american flags on the shoulders, and when I pull out the panels at work, it looks great. I just tuck the panels back in their pockets when I'm off duty and I have a regular coat with some flags on the shoulder.

The fact that you can separate the inner and outer layer and wear them separately is awesome too. The fleece is great for on and off-duty during the fall and spring, and the outer shell is great to have on those not-so-cold, but rainy or drizzly days.

I've had this coat for 3 years now and wear it pretty much everywhere when I have the chance and I've yet to have anything go wrong with it. IF, and only IF it ever wears out, I'm buying another one immediately."
"I first bought this model then I bought the 5-1. My wife decided she would keep the 3-1 in the car at all time. Although it is almost a Raincoat for her since I bought XL size. It is less weight than the 5-1 I bought later on. Still if I don't have my 5-1 I have no problem wearing this one. Is extremely confortable, warm, not as HOT as 5-1 but it will defenetly keep you dry and warm. While the 5-1 will keep you dry and HOT. unless you offcourse take the liner out. So with my 3-1 and 5-1 I actually have like 8 ultra COOL jackets. Will not change Brand at all. Just like the the rest of my closet. 5.11"

    Little use
Not cold enough to really test this thing out yet. I gave 5 stars based on how I like it so far. The fit was darn near perfect and it seems to be very high quality just from handling it and looking it over. Very happy with my purchase and can't wait to really test it in a couple months.

    A cold weather winner
I've been wearing this items for the past 2 December weeks in Oregon. So far it has proven warm in the sub-freezing temps, and adequately water repellent in light precipitation. It has yet to endure lower temps or heavy rain, so I'm waiting to see how that goes. The jacket seems well put-together, and is quite comfortable. I've found the mechanism to attach the fleece liner to the shell better than many, and I expect it to hold up well through seasons of use. Although I didn't notice this in the description, the right front pocket has both a blank ID flap and a badge flap with grommets, providing useful options for different agencies. I had a local shop heat-press reflective lettering to the ID panels, and that worked out great. The nylon fabric of the panels held up flawlessly to the heat and pressure of the process without glazing.
ProsComfortable, warm, well-made, with lots of features.

    Great Value
I bought three of these jackets for my staff. They are a great value and quality I've come to expect from 5.11.
ProsThe inner fleece can be easily removed when you don't need the full warmth. The outer shell or inner fleece can be used on their own.
    ConsNone yet.

    Best Jacket.....Ever!!!
I have owned mine for going on 6 years now and I am finally going to replace it with a new one. I bought it on closeout for 49.99 and thought it was too good to be true. Well, it wasn't and I could kick myself for not buying two that day. I wear it for work and play. It is the warmest I have Ever been. I have spent good money on ski jackets and barn coats and nothing comes close to the quality of this jacket. It is a must have in my wardrobe!!! I have been in sub.zero temps and never once got cold.

511 Tactical 3-in-1 Jacket: Expensive but worth it
You've heard that cheap is not inexpensive, couldn't be more true with outerwear. This jacket is really worth the money because you really are getting more than one jacket plus the quality is great. There's nothing better when you're out in the cold rain all day. This is the second of these jackets I own; not because one is worn out, but because I needed another color.

    Prosinner flleece is removable
ConsNo Velcro set up for patches and no material in the arm/ back zipper area for patches to be sewn on

Having a tough time deciding between this and the 4-1 Duty Jacket, curious about whether or not there is capability to have a badge.

Both do feature hidden id panels that can be deployed at any time you could attach a badge to this panel or have the panel embroidered with what you would like to say.

Does this jacket have side zippers that allow access to your weapon and gear on your duty belt?
    6 Answers
Yes it does. Both the inner polar fleece coat as well as the outer nylon type coat have zippers that allow access to weapons or tools on your duty belt. There is also a snap closure at the bottom that you can snap under your duty weapon to keep the coat down.

I have to say that this is probably one of the best jackets I could have invested in. This is the jacket that our team uses and I specifically bought it working the Superbowl detail in February of 2014. Constantly being out in the cold for 12 hrs it kept me comfortable and warm. I would recommend this jacket to anyone who is in law enforcement and who works outside posts for extended amounts of time. Thanks 5.11 for making a great product. Keep up the good work.

Can you use iron on patches on this jacket without ruining the material?
    6 Answers
I would not recommend it on this material.. I have sewn my badges, patches, etc. There is a hidden flap in a front pocket that fits a badge if you want to try an iron on. I love the jacket, extremely roomy and warm with the liner. One side has a split opening to accommodate a holster.

The pockets that have removable patches, being the front 2 and a large rear pocket are designed to were you can remove the pocket material. It is a velcrow strip that hold the clothe path to the pocket insert. I have not iorned any patches to this material, but it would appear they ahoukd either iorn or stich just fine. This coat/jacket combination is a wonderful product, and i highly recomend it. Hope this helps, please pardon the spelling errors.

i would not do it i have a feeling if you try and remove it will either leave a mark, and the heat from iron i am sure would not be good for it either

We sew all our patches on. The coat still does not leak around the stitching. We have never tried to iron them on even though they have the glue on them. It just seems like they would attach better with sewing.

How do i know exactly what size to order i heard they run a bit large?
    1 Answers
After reading all the reviews on the 5.11 website, all who said this jacket is too big advised to order a size smaller than you usually wear. With that being said, we cannot guarantee that the jacket will fit properly ordering a size down.
