Does not work with G17 Gen5
Like this holster, owned my first one for a G22 and had no issues. Bought G17 Gen 5, however because the Gen5 has ambidextrous slide releases on both side of gun, it will not fit properly in this holster. Spoke to blade tech and they are working on updated version of this holster.

    Super nice holster... But...
I will start off by saying I do like the overall design and the retention method of this holster. That being said I ordered this holster for my M&P 2.0 hoping it would perhaps fit (I usually use G-Code Holsters and they said the 2.0's wouldn't fit in their current level II holsters for whatever reason). I also liked the chop block feature on it. When I got the holster and tried my pistol in it and it went in, but it was a SUPER snug fit, almost to the point i don't know if I could get the thing out if it was truly needed. After trying a few draws i thought perhaps it could be overcome once I got it on a duty belt. Then came another slight issue, I have smaller hands for a dude and my thumb almost can't get to the thumb drive let alone try to do the whole push pull motion they want you to do, and the holster still darn near doesn't want to give up my pistol... So if you have an M&P 2.0 perhaps wait till they come out with one specifically for that model, also if you have smaller hands/shorter fingers the thumb drive may be a bit too low for you. Again I do like the system but more than likely I'll be gifting this to one of the other members of my unit.
    ProsSolid Chop block Great Retention
ConsDoesn't fit the M&P 2.0, not well anyway If you have smaller hands or shorter fingers you may have trouble getting the push/pull motion to draw your firearm

Does not work with p226 or p226r
I do not know how they are selling the p226 model. Mine would not engage lock. OK so my 226 is a rail model, converted to e2 9which should make no difference, and also stainless (also same dimensions. But to make sure I tried one of my buddy's completely standard 226. same issue -- will not engage lock. so I got a replacement and it also had the same issue.

    Durable, comfortable holster.
I bought this holster to go with a new purchase, Gen4 G34. The firearm slid straight into the holster, the thumbdrive and draw is smooth. It came prepared with Quick Draw holster lubricant. I added Glock Ghost Ring sights to the firearm. There is sufficient clearance at the top for the ghost ring and the sight well is deep enough to allow clearance of the slightly taller front sight. The holster rides at my belt line, where I like it and has been comfortable enough to wear five days a week.
ProsThumbDrive is smooth and deliberate Draw is unimpeded

Will not work for Sig P226
This was the 2nd 5:11 Thumb drive holster I ordered for my Sig P226. First one I recieved would not retain the pistol. I call 5:11 and discussed this with them. They told me the holster was defective and to order another holster. I spoke to customer service at LA Police Gear about the problem and asked them if they knew of any issues with the holster. They told me they did not. When I recieved the 2nd holster same thing; Pistol would not retrain in the holster. I went to my local gun shop and had the gun smith look at it and try it with 6 other Sig P226's from different years: none of them retained in the holster. It did retain 220, 227, 228, and 229 but none of the various P226's. The gun smith tells me that P226 is bottoming out at the grip by the mag release not allowing the 226 to reach the retaining device. I called 5:11 again to discuss this with them and they tell me they are looking into it.

Sig 226 model DOES NOT WORK
I heard great things about this holster with Glock models so I suggested the Thumb Drive to my Father for his Sig 226. When the first Holster arrived it did not work. The holster would not retain the gun at all. My father Was assured that it was a defect with that particular holster so he returned it and ordered a new one. When the second holster arrived he had the same problem. My father took the gun to his local gun shop and tried it with a variety of 226 models with the same result. After doing some further internet research my father is not the only one who has had this problem. It seems like the problem is that the holster does not fit properly around the trigger guard. Due to the fit the weapon does not seat in the holster so the retention device never engages in the first place. When my father called 511 they said they were "unaware of any problems". I know that the holsters are technically made by Blade Tech, but how about some quality control here. We are not talking about a defect that manifests itself over time. This product simply does not work out of the box. A review from 2011 on Amazon sates the same issue. Two questions. #1) How do they still not know about the defect after that guy who did that review called them got the same response? #2) How has this not been fixed yet? I don't know. Maybe the blank used to create the holster in the first place was based off a much older model Sig. Even so the least 511 could do is state that the holster will only work with older model Sigs.

    A great holster for rmr's
I built a Glock 17 with a Trijicon RMR and was having trouble finding a thinner retention holster to carry on duty under a jacket. This one is slim, well built, secures nicely and is easy to draw due to the thumb release. The lower price helped me decide to give it a try. I like the multiple options it has for mounting. Very pleased with the purchase.
ProsSlim profile Comfortable to wear Easy to operate
ConsI needed to make a small razorblade cut to accept my RMR near the shroud (see pic). That's due to where I chose to have it mounted, not 5.11's issue. Not really a con, just information.

    Great Holster
What sold me on this was Kyle Lam's demonstration of the holster. I like the Thumb Drive versus the Safariland Hood, and the cover on the front is a deterrent feature. I own four of these. One on my Battle Belt and the others fro everyday carry. You may want to investigate the "drop option" hanger is you are outside a lot.
ProsGreat Holster and fits Glock Models really well.

I'm active duty Army and carry the 5.11 Tac ThumbDrive with my 92FS everyday. I feel confident with the thumb release and it is a much safer product than the Serpa release. Our range prohibits the use of Serpa holsters due to likelihood of accidental discharge. Not the case with the ThumbDrive. The paddle is secure and the rig doesn't present too great a presence. Enjoy

I have a Sig P220 Elite Dark. Will this fit in the P226R model?
    2 Answers
Unfortunately, it probably won't. The only other model that MIGHT fit is the P229 series. The P220 is a 45 (as I'm sure you know), and even though it is a single stack, the size and dimensions of the slide and trigger guard are different enough that it will not lock in place, if it even goes in at all. These holsters are made by BladeTech though, so if anyone has this style for your weapon or would be them.

So you will have to check to see which rail you have to determine which holster would fit - 50101 is for Sigs with the beveled rail 50254 is for Sigs with the MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail. Is this holster a good Patrol use holster? I see a lot of comments about it being a good plain clothes and training holster etc. Is it in fact safe and durable for Patrol work?
    6 Answers
The holster is very durable, and the gun locks very well. I use it for shooting my beretta and 226 at the range, as well as playing airsoft so I can say your partol weapon will stay in place when you have to move. Not only does it look cool, but comfortable too

I carry it on duty. Pretty happy with it. Once you learn to press down on your firearm and the thumb drive together, you can pull very quickly.

I am not in law enforcement but I would consider this a very safe holster. Positive pressure must be applied in the opposite direction for the gun to be removed from the holster.

I used this holster for Pat MacNamara's Carbine instructor course and have since kept it on my belt while teaching and training. It has been jumped on dropped on fell on and so far has held up pretty well. The thumb drive has worked flawlessly since the first and has maintained retention throughout. However I don't like how far away from the hip that it sits. The Safariland holsters seem to sit closer. All in all it works well and has held up well.

I'm looking for a new drop-leg configuration. I'm leaning towards the Thumbdrive retention, vs. BlackHawk-AutoLock. However, think I prefer the 2-strap belt attachment of the Blackhawk drop-leg platform, for belt weight distribution. So, are the mounting screws compatible (or close enough) to mount the Thumbdrive holster, on the Blackhawk drop leg platform...?? Any input appreciated.
    1 Answers
Yes after looking over both items we do show that the bolt holes should match up between the two platforms just fine.

    1 Answers
after checking with 5.11 directly on this matter they have informed us the the model for the P229 will not fit the model P224 unfortunately as they say the holsters are modeled around the specific weapon so it would not fit correctly. we do apologize.

These holsters will fit both Gen3 and Gen4 Glock 17 pistols. The only Glock models that have significant changes between the Gen3 and Gen4 pistols are the long slide Glock 34 and Glock 35. Those two models require specific holsters for each generation.

I've tried it with both gen3 and gen4 G34's, and a gen4 G17, they all fit. I also have the same holster for a S&W M&P. The holster for the M&P has absolutely no friction on the gun once the release has been activated, the one I received for the Glock has a little bit of friction about like a Level I holster. It feels like it needs a little "wearing in". Lock-up is solid on both holsters and the release is well positioned and easily activated with a natural draw stroke.

The Thumbdrive gives good retention and avoids getting the trigger finger involved in unlocking the pistol. I think it's safer than the popular Black Hawk holsters.

Right now the 5.11 thumbdrive doesn't work with any 1911. With that size of barrel it's going to push you towards either leather, De Santis/Galco or kydex form fit (fobus etc.). With current trends heading towards more polymer frame guns, you'll probably see more of this with new holsters.
